Recently, the actor and playwright Eric Bogosian, seventy-three, was relaxing in his sunny, cactus-filled office, in Tribeca. Bogosian, who plays the interviewer on AMC\u2019s adaptation of Anne Rice\u2019s \u201cInterview with the Vampire,\u201d is wiry and affably neurotic; onscreen and off, he seems to be urgently looking for answers. The office was homey\u2014incense, couch, art, kitchen, books. \u201cThis is the funnest place in town,\u201d he said. Bogosian and his wife, the director Jo Bonney, live in the building. When their sons were little, he bought a tiny second unit to write in. Later, a neighbor wanted to annex it for a piano, and in exchange Bogosian got this\u2014a one-bedroom corner apartment with views of lower Manhattan. \u201cI keep winning lottos in my life,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t explain it beyond that.\u201d He poured a glass of water and sat down to talk vampires.<\/p>\n

In the series\u2019 latest installment, titled \u201cThe Vampire Lestat,\u201d Bogosian\u2019s character has also become a vampire. \u201cIt was a dream come true,\u201d he said. In 2022, he recalled, he was flying to Chicago to see a play of Bonney\u2019s. \u201cOn the plane, I\u2019m just, like, musing,\u201d he said. \u201cI go, Yeah, I\u2019ve done a lot of stuff I\u2019ve wanted to do. I was a bad guy in a Steven Seagal movie. I did a lot of \u2018Law & Order\u2019 episodes where I never smile in any scene\u201d\u2014sixty-one of them, as a police captain on \u201cCriminal Intent.\u201d \u201cAnd, of course, \u2018Talk Radio\u2019\u00a0\u201d\u2014starring in his Pulitzer-nominated play, from 1987, and the movie adaptation, directed by Oliver Stone. \u201cGreat, very dramatic. So what\u2019s left? Oh, I want to be a vampire.\u201d In Chicago, he went to Bonney\u2019s place, \u201cand there\u2019s a call waiting for me, and it\u2019s the offer to do \u2018Vampire.\u2019\u00a0\u201d Another lotto won.<\/p>\n

As in recent roles in \u201cUncut Gems\u201d and \u201cSuccession,\u201d Bogosian makes ample use of no-bullshit directness and a piercing stare; yellow vampire eyes intensify it only slightly. \u201cI read the book in the seventies, when it came out. I loved it,\u201d he said. \u201cI saw Frank Langella on Broadway playing Dracula, in 1977, around the same time. He was so powerful. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m ever going to get to be that sort of vampire on this show.\u201d Others do, \u201clike Ben Daniels, in the second season, at the Theatre of Vampires\u201d\u2014debonair m.c. of a campy Parisian theatre act that disguises a coven\u2019s live-action bloodsucking. \u201cThat\u2019s my fantasy. I\u2019m kind of dicey this season. I\u2019ve had a couple of moments\u2014I actually kill a couple of people, or I bite people.\u201d In one, biting someone in a dressing room, he\u2019s startled and looks up. \u201cIt\u2019s like when you surprise a raccoon going through your garbage,\u201d he said. Inelegant, in other words\u2014\u201cmore like weird.\u201d (His sort of vampire also wears a leather jacket and yells things such as \u201cI heard there was an after-party on the asshole floor!\u201d)<\/p>\n

He gave a tour: black-and-white photos from his plays, including \u201cTalk Radio,\u201d at the Public (\u201cJoe Papp kind of adopted me\u201d); a Silver Bear from the Berlin International Film Festival (\u201cI guess I should polish him\u201d); rock memorabilia (\u201cAC\/DC is my favorite band\u201d); a \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d poster, which he fondly rapped with a knuckle (\u201cI named my second kid after Travis Bickle\u2014I told De Niro that, and he really didn\u2019t know what to say\u201d). He opened a door to a library\/weight room. \u201cThis is about half of the research I had to do for my book, a true story of a cadre of assassins who killed the leaders of the Armenian genocide,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I ended up having to read all this shit.\u201d It took seven years. \u201cWhat the fuck did I know what I was doing? But, anyway, I wrote this scholarly book.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bogosian grew up in an Armenian community in Watertown, Massachusetts, and then in a nearby suburb. Some of his forebears emigrated before the genocide; others barely got out. \u201cMy mom\u2019s dad escaped while his village was burning and got his mother out of there\u2014that kind of hellacious shit. We were a typical immigrant-type family\u201d\u2014some accents, cousins, \u201cand it\u2019s all about food.\u201d At school, he felt like an outsider. After an English teacher had him play Lord Capulet, Juliet\u2019s father\u2014\u201cI rose to the occasion, very histrionic\u201d\u2014he joined the theatre club, where a \u201cmarvellous\u201d teacher had students write plays. Writing and acting \u201cwere fusing from the get-go.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Back in the cactus room, a final musing. \u201cI don\u2019t completely understand acting,\u201d he said. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s pretending to be somebody that I can\u2019t be in real life. I saw \u2018Lawrence of Arabia\u2019 when I was a little kid and got a sheet and ran around the yard being Lawrence of Arabia. I love to make believe. That\u2019s my place, a very happy place.
