In the summer of 2022, Steve Lacy\u2019s \u201cBad Habit,\u201d a buoyant but doleful song about a missed shot\u2014\u201cI bite my tongue, it\u2019s a bad habit,\u201d he sings ruefully\u2014started going crazy on TikTok. Lacy, who was twenty-four at the time, was previously best known as a guitarist in the Internet, a psych-R. & B. band that emerged out of the sprawling Los Angeles hip-hop group Odd Future. \u201cBad Habit\u201d was an unexpected but delightful hit. That fall, the track was nominated for three Grammys, including Song of the Year, and spent thirty- five weeks on the Hot 100, including three at No. 1. Interestingly, \u201cBad Habit\u201d was also the first single ever to top five of Billboard\u2019s<\/em> genre charts (including R.\u00a0&\u00a0B. \/ Hip-Hop and Rock & Alternative), which speaks to the odd elasticity of Lacy\u2019s sound. A song such as \u201cBad Habit\u201d can perhaps exist only now, in an era in which every piece of music is available on an endless lateral plane\u2014a time in which genre, as an organizing principle, has largely fossilized.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Lacy released his third LP, \u201cOh Yeah?,\u201d a gorgeous, deeply humane record. Lacy has matured as a songwriter: \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d is rhythmically expansive, and its lyrics are feverish, incriminating. His style, though, is still idiosyncratic\u2014a particular mix of bedroom melancholy and broadband corruption. The new songs effectively marry the immediacy and offline charm of early-nineties R.\u00a0&\u00a0B. (Babyface, TLC) with the disaffection of life lived through a screen.<\/p>\n

I recently met Lacy in the lobby of a hotel on the edge of New York\u2019s Chinatown. It was a steamy, fluorescent afternoon; we carried our iced coffees to Seward Park, finding an empty bench in the shade. Lacy\u2019s best songs combine elements of psychedelia, hip-hop, and alternative R. & B. (a genre developed and perfected, in the early twenty-tens, by artists such as Frank Ocean, SZA, and the Weeknd). Some parts of \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d seem to take inspiration from indie rock (Weezer, Dirty Projectors, occasionally Beck), whereas others skew more experimental (Sun Ra, Parliament-Funkadelic). Substantive verses are new terrain for Lacy, who, as a younger writer, worried more about hooks and beats. \u201c\u00a0\u2018Verses? Who cares!\u2019 That was my vibe when I first started,\u201d Lacy said. But, on this record, \u201cI was kind of mopey until I got a good verse. And then I was FaceTime-ing everyone: \u2018Look at this! I said this!\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

Lately, Lacy has been listening to a lot of Moondog, the avant-garde composer known to mid-century New Yorkers as the Viking of Sixth Avenue. (Beginning in the nineteen-forties, Moondog, who was born Louis Hardin, could be found on the streets of Manhattan sporting a horned helmet and a voluminous gray beard, playing an array of bespoke instruments.) \u201cMoondog is not playing chords,\u201d Lacy said. \u201cWhere I come from, it\u2019s super chords\u2014the flat-9, the flat-5.\u201d Before \u201cBad Habit\u201d took off\u2014and before Lacy turned twenty-one\u2014he was already finding considerable success as a producer, having worked with Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Mac Miller, and Vampire Weekend. Lacy made the beat for \u201cPRIDE<\/em>.,\u201d a dreamy, spectral cut from \u201cDAMN.<\/em>\u201d\u2014Lamar\u2019s Pulitzer Prize-winning, triple-platinum album from 2017\u2014using his cracked iPhone 6, an iRig adapter, and the GarageBand app. \u201cI\u2019m, like, \u2018Am I gonna be the artist, or am I gonna be the artist that inspires other artists?\u2019 Everybody took it,\u201d he said of his style. \u201cI gave it away, actually. Chorus, guitar, R.\u00a0&\u00a0B. drums.\u201d Now he\u2019s been trying to \u201cflip my process on its head.\u201d Lacy pointed to \u201cThe Feeling,\u201d a soulful, wavy new song about submitting to passion. \u201cChords don\u2019t happen until the acoustic guitar on the chorus. Then it fades in, and you\u2019re, like, Whoa, where\u2019d the fuck that come from? Those little nerdy things excite\u00a0me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In conversation, Lacy is charismatic, funny, and frank. He has 3.6 million followers on Instagram, where he posts often, and in a manner that calls back to an earlier, less mercenary version of the app: selfies, memes, pictures of his feet in socks and slides. Lyrically, \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d is surprisingly raw and openhearted. It\u2019s especially vulnerable when it comes to depictions of sex and yearning. After a brief moment of consideration\u2014\u201cI don\u2019t want to cook myself,\u201d he said, laughing\u2014Lacy described himself as \u201csingle-ish.\u201d He sings frequently about the utter impossibility of modern romance. \u201cI think I\u2019m in love with you \/ I think you should be in love with me \/ Bad boy, what you gonna do? \/ \u2019Cause everybody got someone but me,\u201d Lacy pines on the chorus of \u201cShow You Me,\u201d a new song built around a folky guitar riff and a bleating synthesizer. Lacy is queer, and he dates people of various gender identities. During a verse on \u201cShow You Me,\u201d he admits, \u201cBeen a while since I had some coochie stuck in my teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lacy described \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d as an exploration of the various ways in which he might be \u201cunderdeveloped as a human,\u201d mostly because he has been so focussed on becoming a musician. (In 2016, when the Internet\u2019s third record, \u201cEgo Death,\u201d was nominated for a Grammy, Lacy had to get up the morning after the ceremony and go to high school.) Much like \u201cGemini Rights,\u201d Lacy\u2019s previous album, \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d is tangentially concerned with the fallout of one specific romantic relationship\u2014\u201ca heartbreak that happened to me six years ago,\u201d Lacy said\u2014and the grab bag of obsessive things that we do in the aftermath of loss. Lacy pointed to \u201cNice Shoes \/ In Your World,\u201d a pounding, frenetic song about trying to outrun your own desire. \u201cMy dick is getting hard again \/ At the thought of you and me holding hands,\u201d he sings. Lacy\u2019s voice is nasal and occasionally a little wonky, which gives it unusual warmth. He wants his work to feel like a benevolent companion. \u201cI look for this underlying feeling of a hand on my thigh, like\u2014isn\u2019t being human fucking weird for all of us?\u201d Lacy said.<\/p>\n

Mostly \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d is about the sensation of coming to\u2014of having weathered the tumult of love and maybe learned a couple of things. \u201cThis album sounds like post-nut clarity,\u201d Lacy joked. Sometimes, in those tender, postcoital minutes, we are exceptionally awake to our shortcomings and fears. \u201cYou know when you\u2019ve been on a wild bender or whatever? You\u2019ve had the moment, everyone is gone, and then\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. those thoughts,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what my album is like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lacy grew up in Compton\u2014he has the city\u2019s name tattooed on the right side of his chest\u2014with his mother and three sisters. He described his childhood as happy, although, he said, \u201cI didn\u2019t know what rich was. I thought rich was anyone who had two bathrooms in their house, and stairs.\u201d He continued, \u201cWe had fun. I guess there was gang stuff. But you know what? There\u2019s gangs that be happenin\u2019 in all neighborhoods.\u201d On the first verse of \u201cIs It Cool?,\u201d which features a velvety, searching outro from SZA, he sings about the early death of his father:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s this whole thing of cheaters being fuckboys, but that\u2019s actually a deep, deep, deep insecurity of the soul,\u201d he said. I wondered if that verse was somehow in conversation with a line from \u201cNice Shoes\u201d\u2014\u201cCrazy how you can be sad and not notice\u201d\u2014though I told Lacy I understood if he didn\u2019t want to talk about his father\u2019s death, or how grief has shaped him. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful thing to talk about, actually,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s also a weird thing, because there is no sadness to be felt. My father was pretty occasional. I\u2019d see him on holidays and stuff. But I never saw my parents be romantic or anything.\u201d Lacy\u2019s father was an immigrant from the Philippines who worked as a carpenter. \u201cHe wanted his green card, so they made it happen. My big sister remembers coming home, and they were just married. You don\u2019t really expect two people like that to be together. I can show you.\u201d Lacy pulled up an old photograph of his parents standing together. His mother is young and beaming. His father looks significantly older, his expression staid. \u201cIsn\u2019t that insane? They are a<\/em> pairing, but I\u2019m, like\u2014this is so funny, that this made me,\u201d Lacy said. \u201cI grew up a Black American. Filipino? Forget about it. But it\u2019s in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He\u2019s planning to play a show in the Philippines on his next tour, and he\u2019s been attempting to gather more information about his paternal lineage. \u201cWhen you\u2019re that young, you don\u2019t know what death means,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m learning that there is a hole. It does go back to that line\u2014it\u2019s crazy that you can be sad and not notice! There\u2019s a lot that I just kind of bypass, because I didn\u2019t know how to process those emotions as a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that day, over dinner\u2014\u201cI\u2019m on my Lenny Kravitz shit,\u201d Lacy said, forgoing pasta for salad\u2014I asked how he was managing the vagaries of fame. \u201cI want to give it a fair shot,\u201d he said of his career. \u201cBut I\u2019m not necessarily trying to do anything that will damage my humanity.\u201d I told him that I admired how unmediated \u201cOh Yeah?\u201d feels\u2014in a cultural moment defined by curation, filters, artificial intelligence, optimization, and perpetual performance, his songs are goofy, profound, and unguarded. \u201cIt\u2019s actually very scary,\u201d he said. \u201cI was building this relationship with the work, and I thought, It\u2019s just us, our intimate thing. Now it\u2019s, like, Oh, shit, right\u2014I have to share this.\u201d He\u2019d spent the previous few days attempting to sort out elements of the album\u2019s visual presentation. \u201cBeats me, you know?\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m such a musician. I make these things to play them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Lacy, who is prone to philosophizing (at one point, he jokingly wondered if he might be a wizard), was clinging to some sense that the universe will do right by him\u2014that, ultimately, it does right by all of us. \u201cI do believe in that higher power\u2014that everything is already written, and these are lessons for me, even if they kind of suck right now.\u201d He laughed. \u201cI hate a bright-side motherfucker, too. But I do believe in that.\u201d\u00a0\u2666<\/p>\n
