The Times<\/em> has published sixty thousand nine hundred and sixty-some issues, so what are the odds that today\u2019s paper is the one you really want to read? \u201cThe news doesn\u2019t change that much,\u201d Aaron Reiss, an aspiring entrepreneur, said one recent morning. \u201cA newspaper costs around four dollars, and it\u2019s the quickest-expiring product in the world. Even milk lasts longer. So I was, like, What if I sell old news? That\u2019s free for me, and it\u2019s still good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reiss was on the corner of Thirty-fourth and Ninth, outside B&H Photo, where he\u2019d just opened a kiosk called the Old News Newsstand. \u201cI came up with this catchphrase I\u2019m very proud of. \u2018Old News: Still bad, but cheaper and more predictable,\u2019\u00a0\u201d he said. His price for an old issue of the Times<\/em> was three dollars\u2014about twenty-five per cent off. It was a Friday morning (\u201cIran and U.S. Escalate Strikes Despite Countries\u2019 Emphasizing Peace<\/em>\u201d), and Reiss rolled up a metal grate and laid out the news for the day, which wasn\u2019t that day\u2019s news but could\u2019ve been. He had a bunch of June Timeses<\/em>, salvaged from the trash. June 13th: \u201cIn Gray Area of Not Peace And Not War<\/em>.\u201d June 18th: \u201cTrump Lashes Out At Critics of Deal<\/em>.\u201d June 21st: \u201cStrait Is Closed<\/em>.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s the exact same shit,\u201d Reiss said.<\/p>\n

Reiss, who wore a button-down, unbuttoned, over a wifebeater, has the job history of the highly educated itinerant class. He\u2019s been a researcher at a design agency, a lecturer at Yale (Urban Studies 3307: Telling Stories with Maps), a journalist, a ceramist, and a hot-chocolate salesman. \u201cI sold out of a pushcart near Seward Park, out of my ceramic cups,\u201d he said. \u201cI sold it for two dollars, very cheap, and I\u2019d say, \u2018If you like the cup, keep it for twenty.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

The newsstand idea was meant to expand his ceramics business. Initially, old news was partially a regulatory work-around: all sidewalk newsstands in the city must sell periodicals. But eventually it became an organizing principle. \u201cNow we sell weird stuff that\u2019s newsstand-related,\u201d Reiss said. There are ceramics and art, plus zines (Several Chairs I Briefly Loved, Vol. 3<\/em>; Americans Draw America<\/em>) and unusual snack items\u2014Jordanian chewing gum, Iraqi Cokes, Taiwanese canned cappuccino. There\u2019s a rotating exhibition of photos from the New York Public Library\u2019s Picture Collection. Reiss\u2019s five-year-old son, Milo, contributed art, on which he\u2019d written \u201cFree 0\u00a2.\u201d \u201cWrong,\u201d Reiss said. \u201cI charge a dollar.\u201d He has old magazines, too. \u201cI really wanted to have porn,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we have old Playboys<\/em>.\u201d Most customers want cigarettes or lottery tickets, but he\u2019s not selling those. \u201cThose things ruin people\u2019s lives,\u201d he said. \u201cPlus, I would smoke all the cigarettes.\u201d Instead, a friend is developing a scratch-off zine concept, and another friend is writing \u201cloosie\u201d poems, rolled up like cigarettes. Reiss opened for business. Sales were slow. It was his thirty-ninth birthday, and most of the early foot traffic was friends. His wife, Lizzie Fulton, arrived at the same time as an artist friend named Max Glaser, who\u2019d brought a box full of old nudie mags. \u201cCheck this out,\u201d Reiss said. \u201cA huge crate of smut!\u201d He did a little dance. He and his business partner, Sylvea Wong, had been cutting pictures from books of erotica and bundling them as \u201cvintage mini smut,\u201d for five dollars. \u201cThe way somebody takes a pickaxe to a mountain to turn a big rock into small diamonds, we\u2019re doing the same thing with the smut,\u201d Reiss said. The previous day had seen his best sales so far. \u201cI need about seventy dollars to break even,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we\u2019ll do it today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glaser looked skeptical.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think my accounting is all fucked up,\u201d Reiss said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really bad,\u201d Glaser said.<\/p>\n

Reiss opened a ledger, which was just a notebook page listing items beside tally marks. \u201cHe won\u2019t tell anyone how much he paid for the stand,\u201d Fulton said. \u201cAnd I was, like, \u2018This actually affects me.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

Business picked up. Reiss called out, \u201cWe got weird shit for weird people!\u201d<\/p>\n

A man heading to B&H asked, \u201cDo you have Zyns?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have zines,\u201d Reiss said. The man bought a painted ceramic toadstool for ten dollars. \u201cThat\u2019s how you fucking sell a fucking thing,\u201d Reiss said.<\/p>\n

The old papers went fast. Tourists love them. \u201cThey\u2019re on their way out of the city and want an object,\u201d Reiss said.<\/p>\n

Reiss has his regulars. He stocks kosher snacks for B&H employees. One news vender on Sixth Avenue offered mentoring. \u201cI told him I was selling water for a dollar,\u201d Reiss said. \u201cHe was, like, \u2018You\u2019re an idiot.\u2019 But he sold me some cases at cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, Reiss had made a hundred and eighty-two dollars. \u201cI\u2019m in the green!\u201d he said. His friends think that his newsstand is performance art. \u201cThis is a literal store,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a capitalist endeavor.\u201d<\/p>\n

At home that evening, Reiss reran the numbers and discovered an error: he\u2019d forgotten about paying the artists. \u201cMy current cash position is negative twenty-six dollars and sixteen cents,\u201d he reported. \u201cAccounting is an emotional practice.\u201d\u00a0\u2666<\/p>\n
