Just as the Founding Fathers might have anticipated (had they been microdosing while drafting the Declaration of Independence), the American republic will celebrate its two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary next month with a full card of mixed-martial-arts brawls on the South Lawn of the White House. Weigh-ins will take place at the Lincoln Memorial. The night of mayhem is also meant to celebrate the eightieth birthday of the President of the United States, a longtime fan of the sport who first announced the event nearly a year ago at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Its producer is Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cone of a kind\u201d friend and loyal supporter, Dana White, the irrepressible C.E.O. of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

White is the latest impresario to profit enormously from the fascination that human beings have always had with watching other human beings fight. Like Tex Rickard, who made a fortune promoting Jack Dempsey\u2019s bouts in the twenties, or Don King, the high-haired gonif whose era spanned Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, White is a promoter of controlled violence. Head shaved, muscle-bound, and full of bad-boy chesty charm, he is as recognizable in the U.F.C. universe as any one champion. He is also a man of the political moment. In Trumpworld, he is lionized, ubiquitous, as loyal to the President in his way as Stephen Miller. When White came by our studio and spoke with me for The New Yorker Radio Hour, he\u2019d just had dinner with Trump and was happy to talk about it.<\/p>\n

U.F.C. rules, such as they are, are minimalist. Fights take place in a fenced-in octagon. They are nasty, brutish, and short. Ears are routinely cauliflowered, noses fractured, limbs shattered. Referees can be seen waving a frantic conclusion to the proceedings just as one fighter is choking another to the point of blackout. Losers often exit the octagon wobbling, smiling, fogged, concussed. The crowds, in their enthusiasm, in no way resemble those at an August doubleheader. The fevered response from the stands is part of the spectacle.<\/p>\n

While pro football remains the pre\u00ebminent American sport, one of the last remaining facets of a fractured monoculture, the U.F.C. has soared in popularity, filling vast arenas and becoming a fixture of the streaming services. White, now fifty-six, grew up in working-class Massachusetts. He wanted to be a professional boxer but thought better of it when he took his health into consideration. His old friends and business partners, the Fertitta brothers, bought the U.F.C. for two million dollars, in 2001, and made White their front man, giving him an equity stake. The group sold the U.F.C., in 2016, to a consortium led by WME-IMG, for four billion dollars. White is now reportedly worth as much as half a billion dollars and continues to pull in a salary of twenty million dollars to run the show. Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.<\/p>\n

How did you get into this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was a big fan of boxing and grew up loving boxing. It was my favorite sport. And I went to high school with these guys, the Fertitta brothers. They owned Station Casinos in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

You grew up on the East Coast, and then you moved to Las Vegas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I moved to Las Vegas when I was in fifth grade, and I ended up going to high school with these guys. And one night, Frank Fertitta and I were at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, and there was a fighter there named John Lewis, who fought in the U.F.C., and he had a jujitsu school. And Frank said, \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to learn jujitsu.\u201d So we went over and talked to him. We set up a private lesson on Monday, and we became obsessed. We started training four or five times a week in jujitsu and through that we started to meet a lot of the fighters that fought in the U.F.C., and we were blown away. Most of these guys\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. you know, it wasn\u2019t the same story as boxing. The boxing story is, \u201cI came from the mean streets of such and such, and if it wasn\u2019t for boxing, I\u2019d be dead or in jail.\u201d The complete opposite with U.F.C. fighters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Why would that be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your parents put you in martial arts when you were young, your parents had money. Martial-arts training isn\u2019t cheap. And a lot of these guys were college wrestlers, so they all went to college. Like Chuck Liddell. Do you know who Chuck Liddell is?<\/p>\n

Sure\u2014tell everybody.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The stereotypical ultimate fighter. He\u2019s got a Mohawk, big, mean-looking guy with a Fu Manchu. He looks like an axe murderer, if you saw the guy. He graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in accounting. [Laughs.<\/em>] So these were the type of guys that were fighting in the U.F.C., and I thought that their stories were very interesting. And the truth is, if you\u2019ve ever been to a U.F.C. fight, it is the most exciting live sporting event you\u2019ll ever see. There\u2019s so many different ways to win and lose, and just the energy and the buzz inside the building is amazing.<\/p>\n

What do you mean there\u2019s so many ways to win and lose?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, in boxing, I punch you to the head or body more times than you punch me to the head or body, and I win, or I knock you out. In the U.F.C., you can do all of that, too, but you can also kick, knee, elbow. It can go to the ground where you fight for submissions. So it\u2019s non-stop action.<\/p>\n

I wrote a book about Muhammad Ali long ago. I think we both agree he might be the greatest athlete who ever lived\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or human!<\/p>\n

Who\u2019s the Muhammad Ali of the U.F.C. in your estimation, and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, we have a guy named Conor McGregor, who I would say is like our Muhammad Ali. But, if you\u2019re looking for your Michael Jordan, it would be Jon Jones, who is the greatest.<\/p>\n

And why is that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jon Jones has never been beat, and he\u2019s moved up and down weight classes. It\u2019s very, very unique and hard to be undefeated in the U.F.C.<\/p>\n

How did you buy U.F.C.? Because you seem to, in retrospect, have bought it for a song.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, two million dollars. When we were training in jujitsu, and we started to meet a lot of the fighters, I started to manage some of the guys. And I got into a contract dispute with the old owner, Bob Meyrowitz, and Bob said, \u201cYou know what? There is no more money, O.K.? I don\u2019t even know if I can afford to put on the next event.\u201d We hung up and I said, \u201cWow, that\u2019s interesting.\u201d I called my partners, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, and said, \u201cI just got off the phone with the owner of the U.F.C. I think they\u2019re going bankrupt. They\u2019re in trouble, and we should buy them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wasn\u2019t it kind of risky? You had Senator John McCain\u2014who\u2019s nobody\u2019s idea of a wimp, God knows\u2014call M.M.A. \u201chuman cockfighting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right.<\/p>\n

How do you respond to that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think that without Senator John McCain I probably wouldn\u2019t be sitting here having this conversation with you right now.<\/p>\n

Tell me why.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His stance on the U.F.C. drove them toward\u2014and not only them, but us, when we bought it\u2014toward regulation and being regulated by the athletic commissions in each state. [He holds his hands close together<\/em>.] This many people want to see a freak show. [He holds his hands far apart<\/em>.] This<\/em> many people want to see a real sport.<\/p>\n

It used to be banned in thirty-six states. What were the regulations put into place so that it was no longer a freak show?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What sort of tripped them up early was them sensationalizing it, like, \u201cTwo men enter the octagon, one man leaves: the most brutal, bloody, violent sport in the world. There are no rules!\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just hype. You hear that in boxing, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the first one was coming, nobody believed it was true. They\u2019re, like, \u201cThere\u2019s no way this could be real, that this is going to happen.\u201d And it was real. It did happen. And everybody tuned in because of the sensationalism, but that eventually ended up biting [Meyrowitz] in the end.<\/p>\n

How so?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because Senator John McCain went after it and said it was disgusting. Think about, at this time\u2014again, when you and I grew up, right?\u2014John Wayne movie. John Wayne would hit a guy, right? Guy would go down. John Wayne didn\u2019t jump on top of him and start pounding him. He\u2019d stand him back up and he\u2019d hit him again. You didn\u2019t do that. You didn\u2019t jump on a guy when he was down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

At what point do the referees jump in and stop the proceedings? Because sometimes, somebody will go down, and then the other fighter will jump on him and start punching him mercilessly in the head. It\u2019s the fighter\u2019s job to keep going, I assume. It\u2019s the referee\u2019s job to do what?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the fighter\u2019s job to protect himself at all times. And, if the referee feels like he can\u2019t anymore and the fight needs to be stopped, he stops it. No different than boxing. I mean, you\u2019ve seen some boxing fights where the guy\u2019s out on his feet, he goes down\u2014<\/p>\n

Yeah, but I\u2019ve seen some terrible, terrible refereeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I agree. You\u2019ll see it in the U.F.C., too. There\u2019s terrible refereeing sometimes in the U.F.C.<\/p>\n

But you\u2019re saying it\u2019s terrible because they\u2019re too hesitant to stop it or too quick to stop it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both. Sometimes they\u2019re too quick; sometimes they\u2019re too late. There\u2019s terrible refereeing in boxing, U.F.C., basketball, the N.F.L. I mean, you\u2019re always going to have some human error.<\/p>\n

What is the breakdown of fans: men and women?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, a lot more women now than there were in the beginning. In the beginning\u2014<\/p>\n

Because you have women fighters, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My base was males, eighteen to thirty-four. It was a no-brainer. Really\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. you know, I went through COVID<\/em>. I don\u2019t own brick and mortar. All I need to do is set up an octagon somewhere and beam it\u2014back then I was on ESPN\u2014beam it to ESPN, and our business grew like seventy-seven per cent during COVID<\/em>, and a lot of them were women.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve noticed that there are a lot of foreign-born fighters in the U.F.C., and a lot of them come from Dagestan, Georgia, Chechnya, Uzbekistan. Why is the Caucasus such a seedbed for the U.F.C.?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you came from anywhere that ends in \u201cstan,\u201d you\u2019re a tough human being.<\/p>\n

Is it a challenge to try to market the U.F.C. when you have so many foreign fighters? Or it doesn\u2019t really matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, no. I mean, people ask me: \u201cWhat about form? What about language barriers? What about this\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0?\u201d You can be a deaf-mute, O.K.? If you are the baddest man or woman in the world, people want to watch you. If you have that Conor McGregor, that Muhammad Ali thing? I mean, that\u2019s just\u2014they\u2019re unicorns.<\/p>\n

What does Conor McGregor have that separates him out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s got what Muhammad Ali had. He has that ability, when he walks into a room\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. People just are fascinated by them, to listen to them. They\u2019re funny. They have incredible, magnetic personalities.<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re real personalities? Or are they put on in the way that pro wrestlers of my childhood and then after\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some are. Some have the thing that they turn on. Muhammad Ali was the same guy in the living room, with his wife and kids, that he was when you saw him on TV. And Conor McGregor\u2019s the same.<\/p>\n

Why do you think U.F.C. has taken off now? What is it about the culture, the other sports, the media sphere?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Well, I have this philosophy that no matter what color you are, what country you come from, what language you speak\u2014we\u2019re all human beings, and fighting\u2019s in our DNA. We get it, and we like it. Even a sophisticated guy like you that writes for The New Yorker<\/em> and whatever\u2014if a fight broke out in here right now, that would create this sort of energy in here with you and I. We\u2019d be, like, \u201cOh, wow.\u201d And we would watch the fight play out. As humans, it\u2019s just\u2014<\/p>\n

You think it\u2019s just in us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s in us. Absolutely. A hundred per cent.<\/p>\n

Is that something ugly in us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know about ugly. We\u2019re all fighters. We all have to fight. When you get out of bed every morning, life is standing right there to kick you in the face.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve noticed. [Laughs<\/em>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs.<\/em>] And it could be, as soon as you get outside, you got a flat tire.<\/p>\n

Dana, I think you\u2019ve got to give me credit for going this long without mentioning Donald Trump\u2019s name, but you\u2019re associated with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not associated with him\u2014he\u2019s one of my very, very good friends.<\/p>\n

O.K. You spoke for him at the nominating Conventions. I think at the victory celebration, you were one of the speakers right there with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which I didn\u2019t see coming. That was not planned.<\/p>\n

Why? Tell me a bit about the origins of your relationship with Donald Trump. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s political in origin, or just\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Furthest thing from political.<\/p>\n

Tell me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we started this\u2014all the things that we\u2019ve talked about, in buying and building the U.F.C. .\u00a0.\u00a0. Arenas did not want us. What kind of people would show up to see an event like this, human cockfighting? So Donald Trump owned the Atlantic City Casinos at the time, and he had us come to the Taj\u2014the Taj Mahal\u2014for the first fight that we did, U.F.C. 30. We did U.F.C. 30 and U.F.C. 31 at the Taj Mahal.<\/p>\n

What year is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

2001. He showed up for the first fight of the night, and stayed till the end, both times that we went there. And every good thing that ever happened to me in my career after that, he was always the first guy to reach out and say, \u201cCongratulations. I always knew this was going to be big. I knew you were going to\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u201d<\/p>\n

What did he like about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, I think he\u2019s a fight fan. You want to talk about a fighter: I mean, that guy\u2019s a fighter\u2014one of the most resilient human beings I\u2019ve ever met in my life. And he had the big Tyson fights and boxing matches at his place. So he\u2019s a fight fan. And the guy has always been a good friend to me. And then, in 2015, when he decided he was going to run, he called me and said, \u201cIf you don\u2019t want to do this, I completely understand, but I would be honored if you would speak for me at the Republican Convention.\u201d And everybody<\/em> told me not to do it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Well, Dana, tell me a little bit what your politics were like up until then, and what was your sense of his politics up until then?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would say that my politics have always been commonsense, down the middle, leaning a little left.<\/p>\n

In what sense?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My twenties, my late teens and twenties, I spent in Massachusetts, which is very liberal. I would consider myself an eighties, nineties Democrat.<\/p>\n

Have you changed, over time, politically?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, I haven\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n

So you remain a kind of center-left Democrat?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, yeah.<\/p>\n

Do you talk politics with Trump, or did you before the first Convention?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t a currency of your conversation or your relationship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you look at any of my speeches at the Conventions or any of that, I don\u2019t ever say \u201cthe left is wrong\u201d or \u201cthe left is bad\u201d or \u201cthe left is this.\u201d I spoke about who he is as a person and as a friend and as a human being. Because a lot of the narrative that they put out there about him, and who he is as a person, is gross. And absolutely, positively not true.<\/p>\n

O.K., so let\u2019s dig into that a little bit, too. I think it\u2019s fair to say that, if he has that reputation, it doesn\u2019t come from outer space.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, it does. It comes from politics. That\u2019s where it comes from. It comes from\u2014<\/p>\n

But doesn\u2019t it come from some of his rhetoric, and some of his way of treating people and talking about people?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, I think that\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. Did I wish that, back in the day, he\u2019d stay off Twitter a little bit more? Listen, he\u2019s a tough guy, and he\u2019s not afraid to give his opinion, but he\u2019s been talking about politics since he was young. I mean, if you look back at him\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. But these things that he\u2019s a racist, and he\u2019s a Nazi, and he\u2019s this and that\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. I mean, Donald Trump\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. All this stuff\u2019s coming out now, the \u201cMichael\u201d movie just came out, and you see all these videos now popping up of Trump defending Michael Jackson, and the type of person that he was, and that Michael Jackson was around his children and around his family a lot.<\/p>\n

Wait a minute, Dana\u2014Michael Jackson, as talented as he was, as brilliant as he was, was a deeply, deeply flawed human being, to say the least.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No doubt about it.<\/p>\n

And was abusive\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. everything we know about him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wait, wait. He was abusive?<\/p>\n

Toward kids. Yes. It\u2019s terrible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s true, but I can tell you that the President had a very good relationship with Michael Jackson, and had Michael Jackson around his kids all the time, and defended him when that stuff was going down. So to call the guy a racist is crazy.<\/p>\n

Look, I don\u2019t want to go on endlessly about Donald Trump, because then that\u2019s all we\u2019ll do. But, when he puts out a video that shows the Obamas as apes and then won\u2019t even apologize for it, you don\u2019t get the willies from that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

No, I\u2019ve been around the guy so much, and\u2014<\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t give you pause, Dana?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As far as what?<\/p>\n

Just about the way he talks about other human beings, much less race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, I became friends with this guy never even imagining that he would be the President of the United States someday. And, if he was that type of person, I would never associate with that type of a person, no matter who he was or who he thinks he is.<\/p>\n

But, if he does that, how is he not that kind of person?<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s not. He\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

But do you know something that I don\u2019t know? What you\u2019re telling me is that you kind of know\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. of course, you know him better personally, but he\u2019s the most transparent personality we have in public life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

True.<\/p>\n

He talks to the press all the time. He\u2019s on social media all the time. It seems sometimes there\u2019s nothing that we don\u2019t<\/em> know about him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Very true.<\/p>\n

So he\u2019s almost as apparent to me as he is to you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know about the Obama thing, to speak on that. I\u2019ve never seen it. I didn\u2019t know that. But I can tell you this: He\u2019s not a racist. He\u2019s not a fascist. He loves this country. And if you\u2019re an American\u2014race, religion, whatever it is\u2014President Trump is on your team. That I guarantee you.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s another person you have a very close relationship with. In fact, you hired him as an announcer, color commentator: Joe Rogan. Tell me about him, because I listen to him from time to time. I\u2019ve written about him. But now that he\u2019s hugely famous, he\u2019s kind of protective of himself and his brand. Tell me about your relationship with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we bought the company, the company was based here in New York. So I flew from Vegas to New York and had to start cleaning out the office, and there were videotapes everywhere. I had to figure out what was important to send back to Vegas, and what I was going to throw away. So I literally watched hundreds of tapes. And in one of the tapes that I popped in, the way that Joe spoke about the U.F.C., and how fighters in the U.F.C. would match up against some of these Hollywood action stars, I was, like, \u201cThis guy\u2019s great. This is exactly who I need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because his talent is what?<\/strong><\/p>\n

His talent is: he\u2019s a martial artist. Black belt in jujitsu. So the hardest part in selling this thing, the Fertittas and I knew: Everybody understands the standup. Punching and kicking, everybody gets. But, as soon as it hits the ground, people have no idea what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n

What do you mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As far as setting up submissions, the sleeper holds\u2014<\/p>\n

So it\u2019s more hidden and more complicated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. The technical side of the ground game, Joe was brilliant, and he\u2019s a really good speaker. So he could walk you through what was happening seconds before it even happened. And he was great at speaking publicly about the U.F.C.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When we first bought the company, I flew all over the country meeting with editors of newspapers, because remember: newspapers were the king then. So all these guys were sixty to sixty-five years old that I was talking to. All they cared about was ball-and-stick sports, and sometimes<\/em> boxing. You know what I mean? And the truth of the matter was: There was no room for U.F.C. in the papers. So I had to buy my way onto radio. Radio was still very<\/em> relevant then.<\/p>\n

So we would do these satellite-radio tours, and what we learned is: fighters are not good radio. They\u2019d show up late. They\u2019d still sound like they were sleeping. There was nothing exciting. So me and Joe Rogan had to do all these radio tours.<\/p>\n

By yourselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now we\u2019re on the West Coast. We had to wake up at three o\u2019clock in the morning, because they\u2019re going to drop us into the East Coast at six o\u2019clock drive time. So then we\u2019d go East Coast, Midwest, and then the tour would end on the West Coast. Our start all started on radio.<\/p>\n

So he worked for you for quite a while, and then he obviously has his podcast, which is gigantic. My understanding is that you were instrumental in getting him to endorse Donald Trump this last time around. Tell me that story.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. I tried to connect him and Trump for probably six years.<\/p>\n

Was Rogan wary of Trump in some way?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. Well, Rogan didn\u2019t want to be political. He did not want to get into politics. He did not want to be political\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. But then he had Bernie Sanders on.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right. He was kind of pro-Bernie Sanders.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Very. And, even when I talked to him about Trump going on the podcast, he said, \u201cWell, O.K., I\u2019m going to invite Kamala, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, cool. Get it. Love it.\u201d And early on, I started telling the President, \u201cIf you stay on Fox, and only Fox, you\u2019re going to lose, because most of the people on Fox are already voting for you, and every other network says horrible things about you. You got to start getting into podcasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

And who was he going to reach when he goes on Joe Rogan, in your view?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, it wasn\u2019t just Joe Rogan; it was other podcasters, which\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. He was picking me up in Las Vegas, and we were flying to Arizona for a rally. And there\u2019s a group called the Nelk Boys that I had created a relationship with. They\u2019re young kids that do pranks and they\u2019re YouTubers, influencers. And I called Jared Kushner, and I said, \u201cI want to bring this group of kids, the Nelk Boys, on Air Force One with us to Arizona.\u201d And Jared Kushner says, \u201cWell, you\u2019re asking him that. I\u2019m not.\u201d And so I called him, and he said, \u201cYeah, let\u2019s do it.\u201d So in the back of Air Force One, there\u2019s a conference room. We\u2019re all waiting in the conference room, and then finally the President calls us up to his office in the front of the plane. We get in there, and these guys are all excited because they\u2019re Trump fans\u2014and, you know, they\u2019re kids. At one point, he looks at me and he\u2019s, like, \u201cAre you kidding me right now? Are you serious?\u201d And we\u2019re all in there taking pictures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To his brilliance, we go to the rally, he does the rally, and he\u2019s leaving the stage, and the \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d thing\u2019s playing, and he sees one of the kids, whose name is SteveWillDoIt, and he\u2019s going crazy. The President calls him up on stage with him, and the whole crowd erupts, and they start doing the \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d thing. It was the most viral thing on the internet that day. And then he got it. The power of these kids that most people don\u2019t know. The media is all starting to get into it now, which\u2014<\/p>\n

Right. It\u2019s not \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d It\u2019s not the mainstream newspaper.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I always say: By the time the media catches up, it\u2019s over. So then we got him on their podcast, and the podcast did something like eight million views in four hours. He got it.<\/p>\n

If I understand, you called Rogan, as the campaign between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was winding down. You called Rogan, I think, and you said, \u201cAre you going to endorse or not?\u201d What happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

Tell me about that conversation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was flying to Mar-a-Lago, me and Frank Fertitta, for Election Night, and he had done the podcast, and the podcast was blowing up, pulling huge numbers. And I texted him and said, \u201cAre you voting for Trump?\u201d And he said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cThen endorse. Why have you not endorsed him?\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019d he say?<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cI\u2019m just busy. I\u2019m this. I\u2019m that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cI\u2019m busy?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

Please. So what happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n

He endorsed.<\/p>\n

So that was you. It\u2019s on you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is it on me?<\/p>\n

You gave him the extra shove.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. Well, I had been working on him for a few years.<\/p>\n

These days, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve noticed, he\u2019s pretty critical of Trump. Now, he was thrilled to see him endorse hallucinogens and ibogaine, but he\u2019s been very tough on him on a number of issues including ICE<\/em>, the war in Iran. Do you agree with Rogan on this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think that anybody who is the President of the United States, you\u2019re never going to agree with a hundred per cent of what they do.<\/p>\n

But what do you disagree with, with Donald Trump?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Me and Donald Trump are friends.<\/p>\n

I get\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. So you have this, you\u2019re saying, \u201cWe\u2019re friends\u201d\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t have a transactional relationship with Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Do you agree with him on Iran?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know. I mean, I\u2019m not a political guy!<\/p>\n

You\u2019re speaking at the Conventions! You\u2019re at the triumphant victory party!<\/strong><\/p>\n

And what did I say? What did I say when I was at those\u2014<\/p>\n

They were congratulatory. They were personal, for sure. They weren\u2019t policy-oriented speeches.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They were absolutely personal speeches. They weren\u2019t political in any way, shape, or form.<\/p>\n

You think it would be disloyal, you\u2019re saying?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What would be?<\/p>\n

To criticize him in any way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, no, no. Not to criticize him. And I\u2019m not saying that I agree with all his policies.<\/p>\n

But you want to keep that general, not specific, is what you\u2019re saying.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You know what I do? I can control my little world that I live in, in my bubble: my employees, my fighters, my family, and my friends.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re about to have an extraordinary event in Washington. You\u2019re going to celebrate the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a U.F.C. fight event on the White House lawn. And I\u2019ve heard the weigh-ins may take place at the Lincoln Memorial\u2014is that true?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Correct.<\/p>\n

Tell me about that event, its origins, and what you hope to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, we were at a fight, and I can\u2019t remember if it was in New Jersey or Miami\u2014we being me and the President\u2014and he leans over to me in the middle of the fight and goes, \u201cWe should do a fight at the White House.\u201d I said, \u201cYes. Yes, we should. I\u2019m in. I\u2019m in!\u201d [Laughs<\/em>.] And he\u2019s, like, \u201cI think it would be great to have an event for America\u2019s two-hundred-and-fiftieth.\u201d So literally, that was a Saturday. On Monday, the White House started calling, saying, \u201cLet\u2019s start getting the logistics set up.\u201d<\/p>\n

And you\u2019re in charge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

How\u2019s it going to work? Who are you going to have fight?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, every fight actually means something and matters, in the division. Two world titles on the line. And stylistically, it should be a great fight.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it going to look like? I\u2019ve seen sketches. It looks like a fight in outer space with the White House there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reason that it looks like that is: I don\u2019t want to see a light, a screen, a microphone. All I want to see is the White House\u2014the entire White House\u2014and the monument, if the fight goes the other way. So we had to build this thing that we\u2019re calling \u201cthe claw.\u201d It\u2019s the lighting grid\u2014<\/p>\n

And how many people are going to be in the stands around it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There will be a little over four thousand. The President has a thousand tickets. I have two hundred tickets, and Ari Emanuel has two hundred tickets, and the rest are going to all the different branches of the military, of the four thousand people that will be there. And then in the Ellipse, which is a park right across the street from the White House, there\u2019ll be eighty-five thousand people.<\/p>\n

How are you going to broadcast this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We just signed a new seven-year deal with Paramount Plus, and all of our content is there.<\/p>\n

Do you notice people on the other side of the aisle\u2014Democrats, liberals\u2014trying to show up at U.F.C. fights, befriend you, or are you concerned that you have a kind of partisan image?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, we haven\u2019t had anybody.<\/p>\n

And why do you suppose that is?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would never disrespect or turn anybody away. You know what I mean?<\/p>\n

I get that. But it\u2019s interesting to see them show up at Joe Rogan\u2019s microphone, and they might go to a World Series game, or an N.B.A. playoff game, but they\u2019re keeping their distance from U.F.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I don\u2019t think they\u2019re keeping their distance. I think that the difference with President Trump is: He was a Day One fan. He gave us that opportunity to come to the Taj Mahal. And you saw it with Obama\u2014Obama\u2019s a fan of the N.B.A. So he showed up at N.B.A. games and\u2014<\/p>\n

Not U.F.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

Has Obama ever showed up at a U.F.C. fight?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. No. But at the Inauguration, I was sitting behind all the ex-Presidents.<\/p>\n

I saw that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. And there was something that went out online and it said, \u201cOh, look at Dana mad-dogging Obama\u201d and all this other stuff. President Obama turned around and said to me, \u201cCongratulations on all your success. I\u2019m really happy for you.\u201d And I said, \u201cThank you, Mr. President.\u201d<\/p>\n

That must have made you feel good.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, it was great!<\/p>\n

You were just at the White House Correspondents\u2019 dinner, and you were quoted as saying\u2014and I don\u2019t want to take this out of context\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, no, you go.<\/p>\n

You said, \u201cIt was awesome.\u201d That could have been\u2014it was pretty horrible. What did you mean by \u201cit was awesome\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, I was sitting there talking to Pete Hegseth.<\/p>\n

The Secretary of Defense.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

Or War, depending on your\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. We were talking about all this fascinating stuff, and all of a sudden\u2014<\/p>\n

Wait, wait, you can\u2019t go that fast. What was the fascinating stuff you were talking about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were talking about Iran, and what\u2019s going on over there.<\/p>\n

What was he telling you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll leave that alone. [Laughs<\/em>.]<\/p>\n

I make a living at this!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I understand, sir. I understand. All of a sudden, you start hearing just crashing\u2014like, plates and dishes and glasses. And I turn around, and what looked like fifty Secret Service guys are kicking tables over, running on the top of tables, and they\u2019re screaming, \u201cEverybody get on the ground!\u201d And I was, like, \u201cOh, my God.\u201d Then I watched them pull Vance and Trump off the stage. They clear the stage, and then literally the entire stage is guys with guns with lights on them pointed at us. Now the Secret Service guys are coming toward our table. I was the first table in front of the stage, and we don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. Is there a shooter? Is there a bomb?<\/p>\n

And just the adrenaline in your body\u2014in mine anyway\u2014was off the charts. I mean, they\u2019re saying, \u201cGet down, get down!\u201d First of all, I\u2019m never a \u201cget down\u201d kind of guy. That\u2019s never going to happen. If there\u2019s something going on here\u2014I got bad news for my family\u2014it\u2019s going to be a closed casket, because I\u2019m not getting shot in the back laying on the ground. And these guys came in, and how fast they moved through this place. It was just\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. Now, being another man, tell me the greatest movie you ever saw, with those type of .\u00a0.\u00a0. just on steroids. Now\u2014<\/p>\n

Dana, it wasn\u2019t a movie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know. Which made it even greater. And, when it was over, I was like\u2014for four hours, I was bouncing off the walls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What did Hegseth do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me tell you what Hegseth didn\u2019t do. He didn\u2019t get on the ground, either. He was sitting right next to me\u2014and then his wife was with him, and then he ended up taking his wife out of there.<\/p>\n

But you stayed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh yeah. Well, I had to stay! Nobody could\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Nobody\u2019s dragging you off.<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs<\/em>.] Nobody dragged me out. We had to stay in there. And I\u2019ll tell you this, too: You had the Who\u2019s Who from politics, the Who\u2019s Who from the media, and the Who\u2019s Who in business in this room. And lots of far-left liberal media, which were a lot of women. None of these women were screaming. None of these women were getting overly excited about this thing. And then when it was over, and we knew that the threat was over, everybody just started getting together and talking. It was pretty badass and pretty impressive.<\/p>\n

You weren\u2019t scared at all?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Never.<\/p>\n

Not even for Trump\u2019s sake, or\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, they had the\u2014<\/p>\n

You thought that it was under control.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They had them out of there pretty quick.<\/p>\n

What did you think Trump was going to say that night, about the press?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, he tried to come back. He wanted to finish it. He wanted to do the event, and Secret Service wouldn\u2019t let him. I\u2019m sure there were a lot of far-left women in there that probably don\u2019t like me\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/p>\n

What counts as far left for you? What do you mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know, in the media. CNN. We all got together after that, and everybody was talking. And there\u2019s just this level of camaraderie, and just that\u2014<\/p>\n

Buzz.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A \u201choly shit, what we just went through\u201d kind of thing.<\/p>\n

Have you talked to President Trump since then?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was with him last night. I had dinner with him.<\/p>\n

And how\u2019d that dinner go? What\u2019d you talk about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was great. Well, there were other people at the\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. He opened the Rose Garden last night, and he had his first dinner out there. I flew in and had dinner with him, and then flew here.<\/p>\n

What do you talk about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know, he and I just talk about anything that you would normally talk to your friend about. What\u2019s new? How\u2019s the family? Movies? How you been? He looked great. He looks like he\u2019s in good shape right now.<\/p>\n

So you don\u2019t buy the business of\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. He\u2019s around eighty, and it\u2019s not easy being President. It\u2019s not easy being eighty. And then his health is lousy. You don\u2019t see that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

His health is far from lousy.<\/p>\n

Tell me about that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Far from lousy. And this isn\u2019t the Biden\u2014you know, buddies of his, backing him up, saying whatever. He looks like he\u2019s in better shape than the last time I saw him, and he was on point last night.<\/p>\n

Is he worried about his Presidency? His popularity is at a record low\u2014a record low for other Presidents, too. Where do you think he is at this point?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I think that\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. he\u2019s got three more years left. And again\u2014<\/p>\n

Two and a half, but who\u2019s counting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You judge him when it\u2019s over. When his run is over, and he moves on, and you look back at what he accomplished and what he\u2019s done. I think there\u2019s a lot of things that he\u2019s obviously never going to get credit for, because, if you don\u2019t like him, you don\u2019t like him.<\/p>\n

What do you give him credit for, as President?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Securing our borders. I mean, how do you not give him credit for that? The Middle East. Look at the work he did in the Middle East during his first term, and\u2014<\/p>\n

You\u2019re referring to the Abraham Accords.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. Of course.<\/p>\n

And now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I mean, the Middle East is a tricky place to navigate, and I think he does a better job than most.<\/p>\n

I get the sense, Dana, that, to some degree, you\u2019ll be glad not to have to answer questions about Donald Trump when he\u2019s out of office. Am I wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n

People can ask me about Donald Trump for the rest of my life, and I\u2019ll tell you all the great things that I love about this guy. What I\u2019ll be happy to be out of is politics<\/em>. I don\u2019t want to talk about politics\u2014whether they\u2019re his, Obama\u2019s, this guy, that guy, none of them.<\/p>\n

Now, you made a huge deal with the U.F.C. How much did you come away with?<\/strong><\/p>\n

7.7 billion.<\/p>\n

You personally?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, no, no, no, no. The company.<\/p>\n

And how about you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. I do really well. [Laughs<\/em>.]<\/p>\n

I\u2019m trying not to get fat, and I\u2019m trying not to get hurt. Those are my two goals every day. And, you know, live the best quality of life that I can. I like spending time with my\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. I just went to the Kentucky Derby for the first time, with my wife and kids.<\/p>\n

I did, yeah.<\/p>\n

Oh, it\u2019s big. Yeah. I mean, betting on fights. Sports betting, period, is massive right now. I<\/em> do not sports-bet, though.<\/p>\n

But how do you keep it clean? How do you keep it on the up-and-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, we\u2019ve had a couple of betting issues. But we have a company called U.S. Integrity that watches this type of stuff.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a private company, that\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. They let us know whenever\u2014<\/p>\n

The state doesn\u2019t get involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. So we had an issue where we saw some irregular betting going on, and we called the F.B.I.<\/p>\n

What does \u201cirregular betting\u201d mean in this context?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you have a fight that isn\u2019t, like, the main event, and the line starts to move a lot\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. There\u2019s something fishy going on when an undercard fight and a line starts moving.<\/p>\n

Particularly the undercard, not the headliners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, because the headliners are very high profile, and lots of people are betting on it, and\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. It can happen there, too, but it\u2019s a lot more noticeable when it happens on a prelim fight.<\/p>\n

Now you\u2019re also in the boxing business. You\u2019ve just recently launched a new boxing company called\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zuffa.<\/p>\n

What does \u201czuffa\u201d mean, by the way?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To fight, in Italian.<\/p>\n

My impression has been that, with some exceptions in recent years, boxing is certainly not what it was in the fifties and sixties and seventies\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or eighties or nineties.<\/p>\n

Or eighties or nineties. Is boxing declining? And, if so, why are you getting into it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. I think that boxing has been broken for a long time, for a lot of different reasons. I love the sport, and I\u2019ve always talked about jumping in and trying to put my spin on boxing. Everything in life is about timing, and the timing just worked out in the last year. And so far so good. I\u2019m having fun with it. What I want to do is try to rip it apart, build it from the ground up, and see what I can do with it over the next five years.\u00a0\u2666<\/p>\n
