In 1964, the married artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude moved out of the Chelsea Hotel and into the top two floors of\u00a0a loft on Howard Street, in SoHo. Sure,\u00a0they were broke\u2014the hotel proprietor said they could pay him back later\u2014but they were jazzed about their new digs. The place had big windows and an airshaft. (Later, they bought the building; it was the seventies.) Eventually, the airshaft became a storage unit, and it was there, in 2018, that Christo\u2019s studio manager discovered a scale model, complete with electrical wiring and preparatory drawings, for a project the artist had forgotten about from half a century earlier. The other day, at the Gagosian in London, several art installers were hoisting ropes and clambering up ladders, in order to mount the work in a gallery for the first time. The piece, \u201cAir Package on a Ceiling,\u201d was designed in 1968 for the Institute of Contemporary Art, in Philadelphia, and involves a giant sheet of plastic suspended from the ceiling and crossed by ropes that make it bulge and fold. (It never reached the I.C.A., owing to technical concerns.) The effect is disorienting, as if the air had turned solid. Overseeing things was Christo\u2019s nephew, Vladimir Yavachev, who was dressed in layers of black. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s up there\u2014it\u2019s not falling,\u201d he said, peering at the plastic.<\/p>\n

Yavachev began working with Christo in 1990, when he was a teen-ager, and newly freed from the constraints of Communist Bulgaria. He arrived in New York having never met his uncle, who had escaped the Eastern Bloc years earlier, by bribing a customs officer, and had never returned. \u201cIn Communist Bulgaria, there was a word for it,\u201d Yavachev said. \u201cYou don\u2019t become an immigrant, you become a nevuzvrashtenetz<\/em>, which means \u2018the one that can never come back.\u2019\u00a0\u201d Christo and Jeanne-Claude travelled the world wrapping things: cars, islands, the Sydney coastline. \u201cThe enthusiasm was incredible,\u201d Yavachev said.<\/p>\n

Christo died in 2020\u2014Jeanne-Claude in 2009\u2014but the duo left detailed instructions for the posthumous installation of \u201cAir Package\u201d and other works, including \u201cL\u2019Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped,\u201d which Yavachev completed in 2021. At eighty, Christo was involved in the final planning. By the time the installation began, his presence was greatly missed. \u201cHe had always been like a jackrabbit running around to see a project from every point of view that you can,\u201d Yavachev said. \u201cThe way he would look at them, it was like a little kid looking at a cake, like you want to eat it. It was always like this, always \u2018Look, look, look, look!\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

In the gallery, a man in a ball cap had climbed a ladder to examine the folds of the plastic sheet. \u201cMore slack,\u201d someone said. \u201cMore folds.\u201d Yavachev had flown in that morning from Abu Dhabi, where he has been working on realizing the duo\u2019s most ambitious work, \u201cThe Mastaba,\u201d a tomblike structure made of oil barrels in the desert, which, if completed, would be one of the world\u2019s largest contemporary sculptures by volume. \u201cInshallah,\u201d Yavachev said. He has been working on it for twenty years, with no end date in sight.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeanne-Claude always used to say we do these projects for ourselves, and if other people enjoy it, that\u2019s a bonus,\u201d he went on. Many of the works were dreamed up decades before they became reality. \u201cThe projects find their time,\u201d he said. He recalled a phrase he had learned from Bono, on the roof of the Arc de Triomphe. \u201cCathedral thinking,\u201d he said. \u201cCathedral thinking is when you start something that you know that you cannot finish. Any architect of a cathedral, it will take two hundred years to finish a cathedral! You\u2019re never going to see it. It\u2019s very similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In their lifetimes, the artists scrupulously avoided assigning meaning to their art works. \u201cChristo always said, \u2018I did not invent the politics in the Reichstag,\u2019\u00a0\u201d Yavachev said. (They once wrapped the Reichstag.) \u201cComing from a totalitarian country, he never wanted to use art as propaganda. It was always art for art\u2019s sake, just as a visual medium without any message. Though the message is there and anyone\u2019s interpretation is legitimate.\u201d \u201cL\u2019Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped\u201d became a symbol of post-Covid<\/em> unity, even though the piece was envisioned back in 1961.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe power of this, and why it\u2019s so strong, is because it\u2019s an art work and because it\u2019s useless,\u201d Yavachev said. \u201cNobody needs it. This uselessness of stuff is the thing that makes us human.\u201d What did he think visitors to the desert would make of \u201cThe Mastaba\u201d in five, ten, or twenty years, once it was complete? \u201cOh, no, no,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t like to speculate.\u201d\u00a0\u2666<\/p>\n
