Comedians can be control freaks. However freewheeling a standup set may seem, it\u2019s usually the product of obsessive trial runs and rewrites. But every comic walks onstage along a precipice of potential disaster. Unless, that is, the set is fully animated, in which case every blink and cough can be endlessly tweaked. Dan Mintz\u2019s new YouTube special, \u201cWell Rounded Entertainer,\u201d is this kind of routine: it is a cartoon.<\/p>\n

In the special, a two-dimensional Mintz delivers a fusillade of non-sequitur one-liners\u2014Borscht Belt-y, but peppered with severed-dick jokes\u2014in a nasal deadpan that is recognizable as the nasal deadpan of Tina Belcher, the angsty teen \u201cBob\u2019s Burgers\u201d cartoon character that Mintz has voiced in more than three hundred episodes. It is uncanny to hear an animated forty-five-year-old man say \u201cA pack-a-day habit is bad for a smoker, but it\u2019s really bad for a guy who molests Cub Scouts\u201d in Tina\u2019s voice\u2014like seeing Bart Simpson suddenly quoting Scripture.<\/p>\n

One recent evening, performing on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d the human Mintz had no cartoon avatar to hide behind. He rattled off some of his more network-friendly fodder: \u201cI grew up dirt-poor,\u201d he began. The audience let out a sympathetic \u201cAww!\u201d He continued: \u201cWe were money-rich, but we had very little dirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the taping, Mintz made his way through the bowels of 30 Rock and perused the menu at a rinkside Italian restaurant. \u201cI always have to Google every kind of pasta,\u201d he said. Was a gnocco, he mused, \u201cjust a baked potato?\u201d He talked about how John Mulaney, who executive-produced the new special, also officiated at his 2011 wedding. Mintz said that he was nervous before the ceremony\u2014he had to follow Mulaney, after all, and his vows contained a bit. \u201cIt started with \u2018I really wanted these vows to be good. I spent so much time on them, I haven\u2019t even had a moment to watch the news,\u2019\u00a0\u201d Mintz recalled. \u201cThen it was, like, \u2018Your flaws are as hard to find as Osama bin Laden,\u2019\u00a0\u201d who\u2019d just been killed. \u201cIt was a big swing,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat if I\u2019d bombed?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mintz ordered rigatoni carbonara and described a heckler from early in his career. \u201cIt was just a woman saying, \u2018You\u2019re not funny and you\u2019re a bad comedian!\u2019 That\u2019s the kind of heckling that happens on TV all the time, but not in real life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell Rounded Entertainer\u201d is not the first-ever cartoon comedy special\u2014Tig Notaro put one out in 2021. But, where Notaro used the format to dramatize long anecdotes, Mintz\u2019s special is mainly just him, in a red T-shirt and glasses, talking into a mike. \u201cEventually, people convinced me that there should be a reason for the animation,\u201d he said. So he added cameos by \u201cTom Hanks,\u201d the world\u2019s oldest tree, and a gospel choir.<\/p>\n

In an early cut, Mintz didn\u2019t like the shape of his head. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of big,\u201d he said, ruefully. \u201cI can\u2019t go to a hat store\u2014I have to go to Big Hats for Big Heads.\u201d He continued, \u201cThe tricky part was that, if someone\u2019s trying to draw a picture of you, the funniest version is kind of insulting. But if you take the edit too far it\u2019s like airbrushing a head shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

The animated set is based on a live show Mintz did at Dynasty Typewriter, in Los Angeles. The audience was packed with parents from his kids\u2019 school (he has an eleven-year-old and a thirteen-year-old), who turned out not to be the biggest laughers. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t want to see people laughing hard,\u201d Mintz insisted. \u201cIf you see it, people will be, like, \u2018You drew<\/em> that! You drew them to laugh at you!\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He thought back on his own teen years, in Anchorage, Alaska: \u201cI was kind of similar to Tina, I guess, except maybe without her confidence.\u201d He adopted his monotonic demeanor in the seventh grade, when, he said, \u201cI just felt, like, \u2018I can\u2019t betray any kind of emotion.\u2019\u00a0\u201d In high school, \u201cI realized that, if I said something sexually inappropriate in my voice, it would get a laugh.\u201d (From the special: \u201cI think anything\u2019s O.K. if there are two consenting adults\u2014except a threesome.\u201d A classic Tina-ism: \u201cI\u2019m nuts for butts.\u201d)<\/p>\n

For his closer on Fallon, he opted for the opening joke from the special: \u201cWhen you\u2019re little and you hear a noise in the middle of the night, you\u2019re, like, \u2018Please be the water heater, not a monster.\u2019 But when you grow up you\u2019re, like, \u2018Please be a monster, not my water heater.\u2019\u00a0\u201d Mintz had been nervous about how it would play, he explained, because, \u201cin Manhattan, people aren\u2019t homeowners.\u201d He prayed that there\u2019d be people from Jersey in the house.
