\u201cThe challenge of making a \u2018Minions\u2019 movie is that it\u2019s filled with Minions,\u201d Pierre Coffin was saying, at a totally normal pitch, as he fiddled around in the open kitchen of a light-filled studio on the second floor of his Paris apartment. \u201cIt\u2019s my chambre de bonne<\/em>,\u201d he said, cheerfully. \u201cLike Gene Kelly!\u201d Coffin is an animator, a writer, and an inadvertent voice actor: more than fifteen years ago, while working on \u201cDespicable Me,\u201d the film that d\u00e9buted the Minions, he accidentally invented Minionese, the little yellow protagonists\u2019 massively entertaining language. Now, nearly six billion dollars later, no one is eager to mess with a winning formula, so he continues burbling forth \u201cbello\u201ds and \u201cbig boss\u201ds and \u201cHello, papaguena! Tu le bella comme le papaya\u201ds. Coffin has co-directed four of the films, including the first three \u201cDespicable Me\u201ds, but \u201cMinions & Monsters,\u201d now in theatres, is his first solo effort. It took some persuading. \u201cSomeone in a meeting says, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s make that character blue,\u2019 and it becomes blue, just because some guy said so in a meeting,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to make anything Minions-related unless there was a spark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coffin found the inspiration he needed\u2014where else?\u2014at the movies. The latest installment takes the Minions to Jazz Age Hollywood, where, unhelped by the fact that not everyone can comprehend them, they catastrophically endeavor to make a talkie. The film is stuffed with references: Muybridge, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd. It also includes a few non-industry nods: one of the Minions is named Dick, after Coffin\u2019s co-writer Brian Lynch\u2019s dad. \u201cYou know those illustrated books for kids, like \u2018Where\u2019s Waldo?\u2019\u00a0\u201d Coffin said. \u201cWhen we started \u2018Minions,\u2019 I really wanted it to be like that, for there to be lots of things happening everywhere.\u201d The approach, he explained, adds depth and life to the Minions\u2019 milieu, but it\u2019s not exactly Chekhov\u2019s gun for cartoons. \u201cSometimes we have people doing totally inappropriate stuff in the background,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople will see it or they won\u2019t, but, if they do, they might think it\u2019s funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was taking sips of what he called \u201cmy crappy instant coffee\u201d from a mug someone had bought for him in the Basque country. A cat named Ziggy circulated quietly nearby. \u201cI\u2019m gonna have half a croissant,\u201d Coffin said.<\/p>\n

At first, Minionese \u201cwas all made out of \u2018P\u2019s and \u2018T\u2019s and exploding letters, but then it became something else.\u201d He continued, \u201cIt\u2019s not really a language. It\u2019s a melody that I struggle to express. It starts off \u2018Blah blah blah blah blah<\/em>,\u2019 or literally, like, \u2018Blah blah blah<\/em>,\u2019 right?\u201d (He was doing all the \u201cblah\u201ds with different intonations, and the emotions were coming through with surprising clarity.) \u201cIf I need to put the accent of anger, for instance, I need to find a three-syllable word that will illustrate the \u2018Blah blah blah<\/em>.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

A visitor, watching \u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d a few days earlier, had been able to pick some croutons out of the word salad: Shinkansen, Mbapp\u00e9, Control Z. She had read that Coffin sometimes plundered Indian-restaurant menus for vocabulary. Did he keep a running inventory?<\/p>\n

Coffin handed over his phone. \u201cI have two lists because one really got too big,\u201d he said. There they were: the Book of Thoth of Minionese, the ars grammatica<\/em> of the Banana Language. Tapioca, Patagonia, subito, slip, cacahu\u00e8te, pistache, courgetti, paella, lasagna, asticot, Tapadaka. Placebo, loukoumi, kouglof, toda raba, Sharapova, tempura, cacao, platypus, shrub, castagnette, potato salada, potage piquant p\u00e9kinois.<\/p>\n

Minionese is a m\u00e9lange of many tongues, including French, Italian, Spanish, and German (all which Coffin speaks, at least a little), and Tagalog, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian (which he doesn\u2019t). The son of the French diplomat Yves Coffin and the Indonesian novelist Nh. Dini, he learned English as a ten-year-old in Detroit, where his father had been posted. \u201cThe first week we arrived, my dad was, like, \u2018There\u2019s this movie everybody\u2019s raving about. We\u2019ve got to see it,\u2019\u00a0\u201d Coffin recalled. \u201cSo we end up in this huge theatre, and it was \u2018Star Wars.\u2019 Obviously, I didn\u2019t understand a word, but I went home and started making sketches of all the ships and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The visitor was struck by the image of a young Coffin in a dark theatre, straining to piece together a language that might as well have been gibberish.
